What is Reiki?

Reiki is healing energy with its origins in India and the East dating back many thousands of years.  It was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese scholar and monk a hundred years ago.  It was he who first called the energy Reiki.

Reiki – pronounced ray – key means universal life energy. You may have come across this energy before as it is referred to as Ki in Japan, Chi in China, Prana in India and in English, life force, Divine healing energy.

Reiki is different from other methods of healing in that it requires the practitioner to go through a process of attunement, an opening up of an energy channel.  An attunement can be likened to tuning in a radio to a channel that is always available. You could also describe it as switching on a light – the electricity is present but someone has to press the switch to activate it.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki is suitable for everyone including the elderly or the very young. It has been known to help with many physical conditions but should not be used as a substitute for orthodox medicine.

Reiki can be used to support people undergoing treatment for all sorts of conditions from back pain, migraine, MS, cancer, HIV and heart disease to infertility, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, pregnancy.

Reiki is used in hospitals alongside conventional medical care to help people heal more quickly after surgery, or to help reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Reiki is never harmful. Even when physical cure is not possible, Reiki can still bring relief in terms of reduced pain and anxiety.

Reiki is deeply relaxing, reducing stress levels and can help you get a sense of well- being and peace back into your life.  Even if you are healthy with no particular issues, you might want just an hour to relax, unwind and recharge your energy levels. Regular Reiki treatments can help maintain a sense of balance and good health.

What Happens During a Treatment?

Before we start there is always time to have a chat about what it is that you want from the treatment and how I can help. We will tune into your body and make sure the it is ready to receive the healing session.  Usually this is done through a centring exercise and maybe some mindfulness.

When I’m giving a  Reiki treatment, energy channels through my hands and activates the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The energy goes to wherever it is needed most in the body and to where the illness/condition has it’s core. Blocked energies are released, cleansing the body of toxins and helping it return to natural balance.  Reiki is holistic, working on all levels of mind, body and spirit stimulating the recipients natural healing abilities.

A Reiki treatment will usually last for about 45-60 mins with the recipient fully clothed and lying down. I will normally start by placing my hands on the head and remaining there for a number of minutes before moving them on to another position. This will be repeated all the way down the body. The resulting feeling is one of deep peace and relaxation and the effects will last long after the session has ended.
